People had always told you that England was almost bi-polar. Apparently, it was a recent attitude adjustment, but no one knew why it had happened.
Except for you, that is. You figured it out on your very first date.
Sitting in the back corner of the coffee shop closest to your apartment, you hadn't said a word to each other. Sure, simple greetings of 'hey' were exchanged, but England had become quiet seconds after.
At the time, you only knew snapshots of England's past. He used to be a pirate, but he had retired that title long ago. You guessed that he was in the middle of a transition phase, but to what, you had no idea.
You glanced up from the drink lists to the blond, just quickly enough that when he noticed you looking, his smirk quickly disappeared and he looked away. You blinked a few times, watching as he tried to busy himself with scanning the menu.
"Would you two like anything to drink?" The waiter beside your table startled the two of you, and glances were exchanged, silently trying to determine who was going to speak first.
Just as you tried to hide behind your menu, England spoke up, "I'll have tea," You looked toward him again, not sure what to make of his sudden ability to talk. He turned his emerald gaze toward you, smiling, "What would you like, sweetie-!" England instantly tried to cover his sentence with mild coughing, handing his menu to the waiter.
"Um, coffee, please." You passed your own menu, and the silence continued.
After the waiter had given you your drinks, England finally decided to speak up.
"_____?" After giving him a sceptical look, he continued, grinning slightly, "You look nice today. Wearing something besides your uniform is a nice change."
"…Thanks." You blushed, regretting giving away your only shield.
England scoffed, smirking just before taking a sip from his drink, "Well, you'd better with nothing on, of course."
Your brow twitched, "Excuse me?"
The entire walk back to your apartment, your mind was racing, trying to figure out what was going on with England. You'd never seen him act like this before, and you were getting more and more confused.
First, there was the teasing side; with the off-handed dismissals and snide comments. That part, you realized, was from his days as a pirate.
The other, you had no idea. He was sweet, and tried to compensate for his pirate antics.
Snapping back into reality, you started to unlock your apartment door. Unfortunately, you weren't able to get it the first couple of tries, since England had wrapped his arms around your waist and began to kiss just below your ear. His breath was so hot; you couldn't even see where the lock was.
However, just as the lock clicked, his grip tightened and hiked your skirt up, moving closer to nip at your ear.
"E-England…" You winced as he bit a little harder.
Catching your flinch, his tongue laved across your neck affectionately and his grip loosened, allowing you to turn around.
He moved closer to kiss you, but you whispered just as his lips brushed yours, "I understand now."
England pulled back, confused, "What?"
"You're getting rid of your pirate tendencies."
"So what am I instead?" He grinning slightly, resting his forehead against yours, fingers intertwined.
"It's strange, but it's almost like you want to act like a gentleman."
You expected him to become serious and brush it off, but his smirk grew. "I think I like the sound of that."
